How the Strictly Listing Process Works

Using the Strictly Listing site to it's fullest is definitely a bit of a learning process. We feel it is worth the time spent! Right now we offer the the most unique method of listing sportscards online that you will find. The features that we have now are just the beginning, but we put them in for a reason. If you follow the steps on this page we feel that the process will begin to make sense, and you will save yourself a whole lot of time!

The Members Work Area is divided up into 3 important areas. the Main Menu contains links to everything, as well as the menu for setting your settings. The Sportscard manager makes card lists. The Item Manager makes general listings, and sends all items to their final destination.

Getting Started

After you receive your password from the registration email, login to the site with the links provided. You probably won't like your password, so you can change it in the Update Contact Info/ Member ID's on the Main Menu.

The entire process of making listings can be summed up in this order:

    • Set some settings
    • Make a List
    • Edit the List
    • Post the List
Gee, that sounds easy. And it is. But there is more information about each step, so read on...

Things to Do

Before creating any listings, it is a good idea to set some basic settings so you won't forget to do it later.
From the Main Menu, choose Edit Settings to do 3 things:

  • Provide an Image Url

  • This URL should be the location where you store your auction pictures. By doing this, you can put only the file name of your picture in each listing. When you post the list of items, the program will add your Image URL to each items' image field.
      • Set Colors

      • The Colors you set here will be used in the templates that make your final auction description. You may edit the templates and set them manually, but that is advanced. This area is here so that you can have some simple control, and not have to sweat out the hard stuff. You will need to make the heading Background Color and the Heading Font Color two colors that contrast, or they won't be readable. And also, the Background Color will be used as a background behind text, so it should be a lighter color for easy reading.

      • eBay Settings

      • If you are going to post items to eBay, you will need to be registered with their Mr. Lister feature. All it takes to register is to have a feedback rating of 10, have a credit card on file with eBay, and have been registered there for 60 days or more. They have software that you can download that creates auction listings. If you use our site, you do not need it. But it is good, and it is free, so why not. But what it cannot do is create listings using our databases, which is why we're here!

When you registered, we set the most common eBay settings for you. You do need to set the regional zip code for the nearest location to you. If you change the other settings, keep in mind that that would be advanced, and you ought to know what you are doing!

Now use the link to return to the Main Menu, and choose Description HTML Settings:

      • There are 4 areas that you may change here. Two are easy, and two are advanced. The nice part is the two advanced areas do not need to be changed unless you want to alter the display.

      • Enter your terms for Shipping and Payment and Personal Company Info that you want displayed with every auction listing. These will be automatically inserted into your final description at the posting process.

      • If you dare, you may edit the Sportscard Description and Completed Description to change the way things are ordered and displayed.

      • Whatever changes you enter here can be viewed in the Item Manager before you Post Items. See View Final Display in that section.

Ok, now with the general stuff out of the way, you have two paths to choose from. Make a Sportscard List in the Sportscards Manager, or MakeRegular Items in the Item Manager.

      Sportscard Manager

This is the section that will access our half million card database and help you make sportscard listings. The best way to use this is to sort the cards you are entering by set, and then add the numbers from the set screens described below. After that, apply some defaults, a little further editing if desired, and finally transfer to the Item Manager for posting to their final destination. It really is that easy, but do read the step information, because there are a couple of nifty little features that you might miss!

      • Make a Sportscard List: This is the first step to making a Sportscard List. You start by selecting the Sport, Year, and Company for the Card Set Selector. The selector will return a list of available sets for your choices. Select one of the sets that you want to enter card numbers for and proceed.

      • Enter Card Numbers: On this screen enter the card numbers for the set you are working on. Verify that you are in the right set by looking at the title at the top of the page. Enter your card numbers one per line like this:

      • 1
        2
        3
        4

and so on. When you have finished adding the numbers for this set, send your numbers in at the bottom of the box you are typing in.

      • Verify Card Numbers: The next screen will access the database, and create a title line for each listing. Don't worry, you can edit this later. If there are one or two items in the list that you don't want, just uncheck them before saving. If you are happy with the list you have entered, save your list. If you don't save at this point, nothing will be added.

      • Once a list has been added, you can repeat this process for as many times as needed. We do recommend that you add all of the cards at one time before moving to the Edit Section.

Now that you have a list created, move on the the Edit Sportscard List section.

      • This may be one of the most important things we mention in the Sportscard Section: When your list was saved in the list making section, we took a little liberty by making an Image File Name for you. If you don't like what we did, you can edit it, or take it out. But if you are providing a scanned image for each of your listings (and by golly you should!), then we have done the work for you. If you name your scanned pictures in the manner we do, you will never have to enter an image for any auction listing, because it will be automatic. We do this by taking the year and the number of a card, and adding .jpg to the end of it. So a 1998 Whatever #123 would have the Image File name as 1998123.jpg already entered for you. Now this system can be a little flawed if you have two 1998 #123's from different sets, so you might have to make an adjustment here or there. But we feel this is rare, and it is better to have a simple system.

      • Apply Defaults - A close second in the Most Important Things to know: The first thing to do after creating a Sportscard List is to use the Apply Defaults section on the Edit Sportscard Listings menu. At the least, you will want to set the categories for the site you plan to post your items to in the end. You may also set a number of fields where they will apply to all items in your list. This section is a major time saver, and will limit the amount of further editing that you need to do.

      • Call this the planning ahead department. One of the main reasons for the Apply Defaults feature is that if you plan your auction ahead of time, you can actually completely edit all items in one fast step. Obviously, to do this would require some common ground between all items. Specific years, teams, or our favorites, same condition. In cases like these, the same description will apply to all items, the categories will be set for you, and the only thing you will need to do is start the items at the same price. Of course you don't have to do an auction this way, but at some point you will be making decisions based on the number of listings that you can create in a period of time. And running a common them auction is absolutely the fastest way to list a lot of auctions in the Sportscard Manager.

      • Make List to Edit: Edit Sportscard Section, main menu. After creating your lists, and applying the default information to all items, you may edit each item in your list. You determine how many items you want to edit at the same time. The reason for this is because some computers can handle more information on  a screen, and the fewer times you need to change pages the faster the job will be completed. If you have already started you may choose a record number to start with as well.

      • Another of the powerful aspects of the Sportscard Manager are the preloaded descriptions for card attributes. You may choose from our list of descriptions for color, centering, grades, corners, and guide value. If you do not wish to include that information, just skip that field. The final process that gathers up each items information and creates the items' description has been designed to look good with all, some or none of the information provided.

With each individual item the number of characters currently  in your title is displayed. The limit for eBay listings is 45 characters. Other sites will vary.

      • When you have completed editing the individual items, you may choose the View All link to see an overview of all items in your list. Individual items may be removed from this screen. You may click on the title to bring the individual item to the edit screen.

      • After completing your editing and you have determined that the items are ready to go, they must be transferred to the Item Manager. You will find a link to Transfer Sportscard List on the Main Menu, and on the Edit Sportscard Menu

      • After transferring your list to the Item Manager you have completed the Sportscard Manager steps. Your items will not be removed unless you remove them with the link provided on the Edit Sportscards menu. We do this in case you make template changes in the Item Manager that don't work out the way you planned. This way you can remove them from the Item Manager, and transfer the items from the Sportscard Manager again without missing a step.

      Item Manager

The Item Manager has two main functions. One of course is to create regular items that cannot be created in a specialty database. The second is to take items that were created in a specialty database and complete their listing. You must have transferred the items to the Item Manager for them to be here.

      • Making Items: To make a new item click on the Make Item Lists link found on the Main Menu, or the Item Manager Menu. The screen that comes up will give you the opportunity to add 5 items at once. Use as many new item forms as you like. The premise here again is to minimize the number of screens that you have to load up.

      • There are two points that are very important to remember here. The first is the same as the Sportscard Manager regarding images. Enter only the Image File Name (whatever.jpg). The Image URL you set in the Settings area at the beginning will be added whenever there is an image included with a listing. The second key point is that the decryption you provide for each item will be incorporated into the Completed Description template, and this will include any Shipping and Payment Info, or Personal/Company Info that you have provided in the Description HTML Settings section.

      • Editing Items: After adding your items, you may go back and individually edit each item as well. This screen works in the same manner as the Sportscard Manager. One thing we have added here though, is a link to Viewing the Final Display of the item. this will display to you not only the items' information, but what it looks like when the Completed Description Template is used and all of the other information is brought together. We highly recommend that you view at least a couple of your items to get a feel for the display. At this point you can still go back and change the templates and information in the Description HTML Settings, then come back and see the results of your changes.

      • You might take a quick overview of all your items with the View All link on the main menu of the Edit Items section. Individual items may be removed from this screen.

      • Posting Items: Once you are satisfied that your items are complete, go to the Post Items section of the Item Manager. All sites that you may post your items to are listed here, and any special conditions or settings are listed here. Obviously, you must be already registered on a site to post items to that site.

      • Remember that when you post the items the Image Url  (set in the Settings Section) will be added to any Image File Names that exist, and that descriptions will be gathered together through the Completed Description Template.

And that's all folks. Your items will remain in the Item Manager for 30 days. If an error happens in the posting process you may repost with the same information. Remember when starting over to clear out any items in the Sportscard Manager and the Item Manager so that you are starting fresh.
